Instructors for the fall 2005 program

Scott Veirs

Scott is the lead instructor, living and teaching at the labs on land and aboard the catamaran at sea. He has a PhD in oceanography, extensive experience in marine and boat-based education, and a car that burns 100% biodiesel.

Val Veirs

Val instructs during both land and sea components. He has a PhD in physics, has taught physics and environmental science for 3 decades at Colorado College, and maintains a fixed array of hydrophones called OrcaSound at his home on the west side of San Juan Island. His students have utilized the array every spring since 2000 to study orca vocalization and localization.

Todd Shuster

Todd owns the 42-foot catamaran that is home to Beam Reach during the sea component. He serves as captain and instructor during 3 of the 5 weeks at sea. Through his charter company Gato Verde he guides ecotours in the area. He has broad knowledge of the local marine environment and was a sailing instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
