EthoLog 2.2.5
Ethological transcription tool **********************************************************************

EthoLog is a tool for the transcription and timing of behavior observation sessions. The behavioral categories and their key codes are defined by the user in a text file. EthoLog is designed to deal with two kinds of events: State Events, which have durations, and Instant Events, which have times of occurrence (and are embedded in State Events). You can add Labels to any registered event, which can act as notes or modifiers. The transcription sessions can be paused and resumed. EthoLog generates two text files with a session summary and the full sequential and timing data. These files can be exported to a spreadsheet for further analyses.

EthoLog 2.2 is FreeWare, and may be freely distributed.

The file etho225.zip contains the following files:

- setup.exe (the self-extracting installation program)
- readme.txt (this file)
- file_id.diz (brief description)

Copy setup.exe to a temporary directory and run it; the setup program will ask for the directory in which to install ethoLog (the default is C:\ETHOLOG\).

IMPORTANT NOTE: The files toolhelp.dll, vbrun300.dll, threed.vbx, grid.vbx, cmdialog.vbx and dbttip.vbx should be moved (as all dlls and vbxs) to your windows (or windows\system) directory to avoid duplicates in the system; if they are already present, delete the older versions.

VERSION HISTORY

Version 1.0 - first released version (10/95).

Version 1.0c - final release of v.1 (08/96). A bug related to the no-reinitializing of IE labels between sessions was fixed.

Version 2.0 - (10/96) New resources added (Screen Timer, Regressive Timer Option, Session Description Notes, NoState Option), some minor but relevant changes were made in the output files, and the whole interface was improved.

Version 2.0.1 (12/96) Second beta release.

Version 2.0.2 (03/97) Final release of Version 2.0.

Version 2.1.0-1 (10-12/97) Beta releases of Version 2.1

Version 2.1.2 - (02/98) Minor debbuging.

Version 2.1.3 - (04/98) Corrects bug in the Categories Key file Editor related to the use of commas (Key codes and Categories' names are now wrapped in quotation marks).

Version 2.2.1 - (08/98) First beta release of v.2.2: general interface improvement; file editing options, sequential analysis added (Toolpack).

Versions 2.2.2-3b - (09/98) Second / third beta releases of v.2.2 (some debugging).

Versions 2.2.4 - (11/98) First non-beta release.

Version 2.2.4b - (01/99) Bug in the toolpack (crash in systems with a "N:\" drive) corrected.

Version 2.2.5 - (04/99) Bug in the toolpack (cannot save .seq/.lg2 files to floppy disk) corrected.

Improvements toward multiple-subject interactions and alternative sampling techniques are expected for the next versions of EthoLog.
