Sustainability ship design
Information about "sustainability ships" -- sailing vessels that push the envelope of green technology, inspire innovation, and could become or inform the next Beam Reach research vessel. The focus here is on organization of practical engineering data, cost-benefit analyses, and equipment sources.
Gato Verde, 1995 Fountaine Pajot Venezia 42' Catamaran (LOA 42’, LWL 40’+, beam 23’, dry weight 19000lbs, full capacity weight 23500lbs) Orignially powered by dual 27hp Yanmar inboard diesels, this 12.75m Fontaine-Pajot catamaran's saildrives are now connected to larger 3 blade 17”X15” props and dual 48V Lynch motors assisted by a 14kW biodiesel genset and custom "Enermatic" controller by Ample Power.

- 6/2009 note: The motors are Lynch LEM200 series rated at 9000 watts. When pushing
the boat at cruising speed (6 knots) in calm conditions the motors draw approximately 10800 watts (2x5400 watts). The Lynch motors are coupled to Yanmar SD20 sail-drives which have an internal 2.64:1 gear reduction turning three blade 17”X15” props. I don't know the RPM of the props or the motors at cruising speed.
